If £30 is still inaccessible to you, and you really want to give chair yoga a try, please get in touch with me diva ! I have two free spaces available each week for people who need yoga but cannot access it for this precise reason!
Why not?
I’m serious! I’ve been a qualified yoga teacher since November 2020, and building my own practice since around 2008, and since becoming a yoga teacher, I have heard (and perpetuated) the myth that a mat-based practice can be “fully inclusive”, or “completely accessible to all levels”, and that is just not true, by any stretch of the imagination!
For a long time I wanted the yoga I shared to mean something, to be meaningful, to help people, and to connect. I wanted to tell people that ANYONE could practice with me regardless of physical ability, gender, age, potential impairments, but I didn’t know how to do that, and actually follow through!
In 2023 my whole life changed. I came out as lesbian (no, I was not hiding in the closet my entire life, I genuinely didn’t know until I knew!), I separated from my then husband, I met an entirely new group of humans, and found amazing new friendships that made me feel like I could just be myself.
But what does all this have to do with chair yoga, Sam?
Well, my partner is mobile impaired, and every day I witness what that actually looks like. Not just the getting around, struggling to find car parking spaces, only to see they’ve been taken by people without blue badges (give me strength!!), and navigating all the things I take for granted as a very able bodied person. But also, the pain. The very real bodily aches, and pains that come in waves, that can throw plans right out the window. And of course, the exclusion from things, like yoga, that able bodied people get to enjoy in so many different ways, and environments.
So that is why. That is why I offer chair yoga, because mat-based practices can never be “fully inclusive” or “welcome for all abilities”. It’s impossible! And I’m not saying that chair-based practices are fully accessible either, but that is my entire point! No one practice can ever be “completely inclusive”, and the sooner we all get real and honest about that fact, the better!
But chair yoga is absolutely a step in the right direction, and all we need is for more teachers to begin sharing it, locally and beyond! Because it is the most challenging practice I teach, and I L O V E it!! Or as we say in Cymru, "Dw i’n wrth fy mod!!”
